Dr. Avi Nov

What is plant based Raw Food, and why do we promote this food in our Yoga Retreats? To answer these questions we will start by describing what is meant by Raw Food, and thereafter we will explain the advantages of this the type of food.

The advantages of a plant based Raw Food diet can be even greater when combined with a Yoga practice. Such a combination of plant based Raw Food and Yoga will, among other benefits, boost your immune system and keep you energized for the whole day.

What is Raw Food?

Raw Food consists of unprocessed vegan foods that have not been heated above 46 Celsius (115 Fahrenheit).

A plant based Raw Food diet includes mainly:

  • Raw fruits and vegetables
  • Sprouts
  • Seeds and nuts
  • Fresh herbs
  • Seaweeds
  • Cold pressed juices and oils
  • Raw milks, made mainly from seeds and nuts
  • Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, miso, and  kimchee

What are the advantages of Raw Food?

There are many benefits to eating Raw Food, including reducing inflammation, assist detoxification, getting more energy, better digestion, and improved overall health condition. There are many reasons for this, among them: (1) The watery and fiber content of Raw Food keeps the digestive system clean; (2) Raw Food alkalizes the body so that infectious agents have a difficult environment to survive in, and thus the immune system gets stronger; (3) Raw food has a healthy amounts of fiber, which means that you do not need to eat so much to feel satisfied.

The benefits of eating vegan Raw Food arise also from the basic fact that cooking may destroy the nutrient content of many foods. The heat generated by cooking diminishes the vitamins, damages proteins and fats, and destroys enzymes. For these reasons, and more stated below, we promote eating plant based Raw Food  in our Yoga Retreats.

Why do we recommend Raw Food with Yoga?

Yoga practice includes many exercises which specifically help cleansing the digestive system and generally detoxing the body. However, if you eat heavier food, such as animal products, you will have difficulties with your yoga practice.

It is obvious that plant based Raw Food has more flavor than cooked food, consequently there is no need to add salt, sugar, or spices that can irritate your digestion system or highly stimulate your nervous system. This is another reason that we promote eating plant based Raw Food in our Yoga Retreats.

The greatest way to get the maximum benefit from your yoga practice is to make sure to eat light foods. This goal can be achieved by eating vegan Raw Food. In my experience, eating plant based Raw Food makes your yoga practice easier and more enjoyable.
